Oh deer!

This lovely young deer has taken up residence this winter outside Chris and Mary Miller's house in Centerville, where it dines on Mary's raspberry plants and slumbers in the shelter just outside their basement patio window. Care is taken to make sure little Ava and Elizabeth don't let it in the house! Here, Ava and the deer eye each other through the glass, as they do daily. We hope the deer, who they've dubbed Milo, makes her way back to the safer realm of the woods when spring comes. (1/23/2010 UPDATE: Uh oh, the deer has passed away of unknown causes as it appeared to sleep by the patio door, we're sad to report.)

Happy Birthday to Florence!

Happy 84th Birthday to lovely, lively Aunt Florence! That's her front and center in this good ol' Sprick family photo with her siblings.

The splendid Kirkwoods

A delightful Kirkwood family photo from Christmas Day in Lake City: in back, Tuk, Sheila, Ted, Katie, Teddy, Jeff, Tracy and Barb; in front, Hailey, Jane, Kate, John, Joe and Natalie. We know that Sandy, Paul and Kelly, who live in Texas, were with them in spirit.

Aunties visit UMD

Aunt Katie sent us these photos from an aunties' 1979 visit to the University of Minnesota Duluth, where cousin Chris Miller, he of the long blond locks and farmer's overalls (??!!), was a student. Pam had graduated by then and lived in Duluth working at HBJ at the time. Florence, Pam, Anna, Chris and Emma.

Barbie time

Cousins Patti Lou Rafferty, Sandy Kirkwood (in awesome cat's-eye specs), Jane Kirkwood and Cindy Sprick played with Barbie dolls in this undated slide. It's one of many delightful slides we found in Anna's old photo boxes. You'll see many more in the posts below. Thanks, Anna, and enjoy, cousins!

Young Kirkwoods on a pretty day

Another sweet slide from Anna's archives: Jane, Sandy and Tuck Kirkwood sat near their parents' pretty flowers at their old home in Lake City in February 1966.

Kirkwoods' 10th wedding anniversary, July 1962

Love these slides of a big July 1962 celebration to honor C.J. (John) and Kate Kirkwood on their 10th wedding anniversary: John and Katie re-creating their wedding photo pose with attendants Al Kirtz and Emma (Tex) Sprick Krociel.
Another really nice one of Al, John, Kate and Tex.
John stuck right by his beloved Kate. He still does.
Greeting guests whilst waiting for that pretty little cake to be served.
Everybody happily chowed down. If you click on this photo to make it larger and easier to view, you can see details, like your scrapblog editor back there smiling at you. Note the old outhouse nearby.
Still chowing down. Think that's cousin Sandy approaching the table at right.
Honored mothers Kirkwood and Sprick found a comfy step to eat their picnic food on. Grandma wore a spiffy hat.

Really big, noisy party

Anna had some delightful slides from an August 1962 birthday party for cousins Cathy Miller and JoAnne Schmidt at Colvill Park in Red Wing, Minn. Cousins, you're all so cute!
From left, cousins Karl Schmidt, Jane Kirkwood, Sandy Kirkwood, Tuck Kirkwood, Patty Lou Raffery and Pam Miller. In back at the birthday girls, JoAnne and Chats. Amazing, how the cakes went unmolested for so many seconds.
Time to make noise. From left: Joe Kirkwood, Pam Miller, Karl Schmidt, Jane Kirkwood, Sandy Kirkwood, Patty Lou Rafferty, Chris Miller, Aunt Annette Sprick Kulseth and Cathy Miller. Nice pants, Chatsies!
Chris plays lead trombone. Nice shirt-shorts combo, Sandy!
Alverna Sprick Miller kept order.
Alverna cleaned up. Lining up nicely with Grandma Sprick.
Bring on the cakes!

Flo and her little ones

Somee vintage photos of Aunt Florence Sprick Bye (then Schmidt) and her sweet little ones: Patty-Lou, Karl and Florence on a Christmas Day in the late 1950s.

Cousin Karl wore a jaunty hat and grin as he, JoAnne and Florence arrived at a family gathering in 1961. JoAnne and a funny-looking (fake?) pooch in August 1962.

Picnic at Elmer's

Ed, Grandma Sprick, Cindy, Hal and Joe pose on the patio at Elmer and Mavis Sprick's Oregon, Wis., home in the 1960s.

Monterey moments

In 1961, the Millers moved to Fort Ord, Calif., where Dad/Uncle Bill was stationed. They spent as much time as possible on the windy beaches around Monterey, and sent a lot of slides back to Grandma Sprick and Anna. Here are some: Watching seals on the beach at Point Lobos State Park.
Alverna and Chatsies (this photo was actually taken as the Millers were getting into the car to head to California).
On a train, on a train! Pam and Chris do the loco-motion.
Cathy's first birthday party.
Pam and Chris after Pam's first day of kindergarten. Note they're dressed in red, as usual, so Alverna could keep track of them.
Chris reads the pictures. The poor book looks a little tattered.

Monterey moments, 2

More photos sent to Anna in 1961 by the Millers in Monterey, Calif.: Cathy at Point Lobos State Park, a beautiful stretch along the ocean.
Pam and Chris in a tree in the Miller's back yard at Fort Ord.
Note Pam and Chris' patched jeans. They didn't care.
Alverna labeled this slide "Health and Happiness."
Pam, pre-eye surgery.
Chris, ever in motion.

Sweet in sepia

Old photos exposed to light tend to go to sepia, as this delightful 1961 shot of Alverna, Chats, Sandy and Jane is. Still, it's pretty as can be.

Sepia Kirkwoods

Speaking of sepia, here are a few of the Kirkwood kids in July 1961. Regret these faded before they were preserved somewhere, because they're really nice photos. Janie, Sandy and Joe posed nicely with Aunt Anna.
What sweet little Kirkwoods! Even Janie is behaving!
Oh oh, the sweet little Kirkwoods are getting squirrely. They're coming after the photographer!
Joe, quite the little flower.

Ghost deer

Cousin Dan took these photos of Old Frontenac deer feeding on trimmed brush from his cabin window. We love the ghostly effect the window provided ... or maybe some of the deer were ghosts.

Tall people come over for supper

The scrapblog editor had the Broberg boys over for potato soup Monday night. They just get taller and taller. Nick and Marty tower over me, so I was very, very nice to them ...
... except for giving Marty a noogie-noogie. Check out his double mohawk, which has been frightening his wrestling opponents in certain defeat.
Dan used to be tall, but he's short next to his sons.
A few days before, Marty had won four matches in a row. No doubt the double mohawk added to the effect.
A photo from before the haircut, taken in Michigan's Porcupine Mountain area the week before Christmas.
