Adelaide

When Noah was a little boy, he refused to go down into our basement because of the "scary lady" there. But he would go if I went with and held his hand. There, he would stare fascinated at the photo of the "scary lady." As I always told him, no one could have been less scary than Adelaide Sprick Detlefsen, the beautiful and haunting subject of the photo. Her life was in some ways mysterious and tragic, and cut short way too soon by a car accident in 1973. Remember how kind and gentle she was to us all as children? She was the consummate lady. Here are three photos: first, the "scary lady" photo, probably taken on the occasion of her confirmation or high school graduation; second, Adelaide all dressed up, as she always was, and third, my favorite, Adelaide atop a cliff that she and Ed had hiked up near the farm.
