It all started with them: Maria and Claus Sprick

Maria and Claus Sprick are pretty young in this undated photo, which was taken in front of the house they built on S. 6th St. in Lake City, Minn. The bench later sat on the front porch of the farm and survived 12 kids and several dogs. Short bios on these two, the grandparents of us middle-aged cousins: Claus was born on Oct. 13, 1874, in Germany and arrived in America on July 4, 1876, the U.S. centennial, with his parents. He died on Nov. 24, 1942. Maria Katherine Augustine was born on April 27, 1887, in Belvidere Township, Goodhue County, Minn., and died on Feb. 24, 1986. They had 12 children, 11 of whom survived into adulthood, four of whom survive yet. This blog is dedicated to those four: Anna, Florence (and Harry), Kate (and John) and Elmer (and Mavis), and to the memory of Clarence, Adelaide, Ed, LeRoy, Marion, Emma, Annette and Alverna.
